"I recently read this article from The Chronicle of Higher Education - here - about the necessity of training higher education instructors in how to teach:
The article describes how historically professors have been hired based on their merits as researchers, and universities have rewarded professors with career advancement also based largely on the research they have produced. Relatively little attention and incentives have been attached to teaching. However, more recently, as universities have come under greater scrutiny by the public, some universities have started to encourage more effective pedagogy through institutional and structural changes. A major element in this change has been the slow abandonment of the 'myth of the natural teacher.' Good teaching requires effective planning, training, and experience."
