A Different Kind of Constructivism

Jan submitted the following regarding Lego Serious Play (LSP), stating,

"Lego Serious Play (LSP) is a methodology that aims at facilitating thinking, communication and problem solving in face-to-face meetings. It is based on a series of instructor-led activities, which require learners to illustrate their ideas using Lego bricks.
The concept was first developed in the 1990s, but it gained major attention only in the last 10 years. Today, it is mostly applied in academic and corporate environments, to foster team work and creative thinking.

This approach follows the constructivist theory, which theorizes that learners construct their knowledge and extend it though social interaction.
Although this process cannot be applied on e-learning, some parts of it could be interesting examples and potential sources of inspiration for instructional designers.

For example, an e-learning module that mimics certain aspects of Lego Serious Play could include the following: when teaching principles, course facilitators could present learners with a scenario and ask them to illustrate what their actions would be by drawing an idea on paper, then share it with other learners, together with an audio explanation of their idea. Similarly, learners could present their intended actions using a simple on-screen game which would require them to build a fictional character, equipped with the necessary features to better perform the task. "
