Design Matters

This just in from Marcia on the importance of visual design:

"Remember those clunky, old, tan and bland storage drives? The Iomega zip drive of years past is a great example of why design matters. Iomega is a very popular data storage device manufacturer. But, that wasn't always the case. They always had a great product - so, why weren't more people buying it? As sales limped along, the principle players at Iomega decided to re-design their product. Same device, different design. The result: sales sky-rocketed!

Good visual design not only enhances product desirability, it also enhances learning.
According to dual coding theory, the human brain can process language (speech as well as writing) and non-linguistic visual input at the same time! Not only can it do it, doing it actually enhances the retention and recall of information.

Just like grating, inappropriate, or poorly rendered audio can distract from learning, ill-chosen visuals can also detract - representing a huge missed opportunity.
