The merits of synchronous learning!

Jeffrey submitted the following regarding synchronous learning.

"So much emphasis is placed on asynchronous e-learning. This is probably because it allows adults to time shift and learn on their schedule. Sometimes synchronous learning is the better solution for certain types of education.. I have used synchronous learning for several purposes and it has been effective. We use it most for case conference style tumor boards where doctors convene to discuss difficult or unique cases. We also use synchronous learning for Grand Rounds where a topic is discussed by and expert with a Q and A session at the end. Usually both of these types activities involve 40-50  physicians (some on site, some at other locations).

Given the state of healthcare today, any time not spent treating patients is precious and expensive. So being able to interact with each other in real time to come to a consensus or gain knowledge about a subject without wasting time travelling is extremely cost effective.

Here is a link to a Case Study on effective synchronous learning in a distance environment."
